How Children's Miracle Network helped Isabella beats the odds

When a child is battling a life or death medical crisis, sometimes it's the little things that make a big difference.

For 3-year-old Isabella, it was a ride in a special wagon.

Gathering leaves on a beautiful fall day, this is more than a simple stroll for Isabella Schmidt, her mom, Candice, and little brother, Daniel.

Two years ago, this family didn't know what Isabella's future would bring.

"I noticed a lump right here on her head," Candice said. "Then I just assumed she had bumped her head because she was not even 2 at the time. I took her to her pediatrician after a few days and she sent us right to Beaumont."

The lump turned out to be a rare tumor that attached to Isabella's brain, and sent Candice and her husband Eric, rushing their 2-year-old to the hospital for surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

For the Waterford family, days turned into months at Beaumont Children's Hospital.

But those hospital visits were filled with hope, thanks in part to Children's Miracle Network.

"The thing we loved the most was from Children's Miracle Network was their little wagon rides," Candice said. "Isabella loved taking wagon rides because you could hook the IV pole right up to the wagon. And we'd just walk around the floor and go into the Children's Miracle Network garden, which she just loved."

That's why the Schmidt family is taking part in Children's Miracle Marathon. It is a virtual 27-day fundraiser that asks everyone to walk a mile a day - and then an extra mile for the kids.

Money raised here goes to the Children's Miracle Network hospital in our area, Beaumont Children's Hospital.

"We're so happy to represent Beaumont hospital and Children's Miracle Network for everything they did for us," Candice said.

Now the family celebrates Isabella's remission and will never forget what it took to get to this place.

"Do you remember that is your first chemo day and last chemo day with daddy," Candice said to Isabella. "You got to wear princess wings, when you were done,"

The final mile in the Miracle Marathon is for the kids and it's Sunday Oct. 12th.

So no matter where you are, if you can walk a mile for the children at Beaumont Children's Hospital.
