A chair heading to a new home is much more than just a piece of furniture. For some families, it represents hope.
Couches, tables, beds and more are all available to people in need thanks to the Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan.
"We literally came from nothing to something, so, for the Furniture Bank to bless us with all this furniture was a blessing," says Shirece Williams.
"Our mission is so kids are sleeping in warm beds instead of on cold floors; families have tables around which they can gather to share a meal; and those who are most vulnerable among us can live with the stability and dignity that many of us take for granted," says Robert Boyle.
Furniture Bank serves more than 120 families in poverty every month by giving them donated furniture.
The challenge is, though, that donations are down.
"The more furniture we have the more families we can help, the wider we can open our doors to help more people. And, without the furniture, we simply can't do it," says Boyle.
If you have a bed, a sofa, any gently-used furniture to give, they will come to your house to pick it up. It's that easy!
They recently expanded their services and now pick up in Oakland, Macomb and parts of Wayne County.
For you it's a tax deduction, but for those who receive the furniture it's warm bed to sleep in, or a table to eat at as a family.
"I would like to say thank you. I appreciate all your help. Keep doing what you're doing; help out these families that need help," says Williams.
You can support Furniture Bank by attending a comedy night fundraiser on Thursday, October 6 at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak.
