Better Made celebrates 85th birthday

An iconic Detroit company is celebrating its birthday, just in time for National Potato Chip Day.

Friday marked the 85th anniversary of the day Better Made Potato Chips opened its doors.

It's a regional company and is well-known in Michigan, but it also has a following nationwide.

"We do a lot of sales of our chips over the Internet. We sell a lot into Florida and Arizona where people have moved out, and we actually have people here send them to their friends," says president Mark Winkelman.

The company rolled out three new flavors last year: honey barbecue, sour cream and cheddar and better pop popcorn.

"You don't want to bring out to many too soon, so, three [new flavors] in one year is actually quite a lot for us," says Winkelman.

Sal Cipriano, current owner, remembers when his father first founded the company. He says he also worked a second job as a milkman.

"Our goal is not to be the biggest, but we want to be known as the best," says Cipriano.

Employees love the brand, too. Cipriano says it's very common to have employees who have worked with the company for more than 30 years. He added one employee has even been with the company for 50 years.

"We run the company as a family. I'm 'Sal' to everybody in here, and I know a lot of people by first-name basis," he adds.

National Potato Chip Day is Saturday, March 14, 2015.
