(WJBK) - Deafness in dogs can occur from chronic ear disease, or can be genetic when the dog is born with hearing loss. The genetic deafness is seen in dogs that have no pigment in the ears. A breed of dog that normal has colored hair is white in the ears. Deaf dogs are not more difficult to train but they have to be trained differently since everything is visual for them. It’s easier to train them when they have another dog to teach them to follow along. It’s very important to have a secure and safe environment for a deaf dog as they are unable to hear the dangers of cars and other things they can encounter. This week's pet is "Lucky." He's a young White/Brown Beagle that was born deaf. For information about adopting Lucky, contact the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society, www.GPAAS.ORG. or call 313-884-1551.
