Rescued dog's plight highlights need for proper grooming

- The Grosse Pointe Animal Society is currently caring for Dakota, a 6-7 year old Shihtzu Mix that was found seriously neglected. He'll soon be ready for adoption. Dakota's condition when he was found highlights the need for proper grooming, especially for certain breeds. Non shedding or low shedding dogs are very popular.  Smaller breeds like Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Shihtzu, Lhasa, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle, Bichon, or the bigger breeds like Bouvier, Airedale and Doodles are dogs that require regular grooming.  It is important to know they have continuous growth hair, not fur, like other dogs that shed.  Depending on how short you keep them, they should be groomed every 2-4 months.  When these type dogs are not groomed, the hair becomes matted and tightens to the skin, which is painful.  Other long haired breeds like Pekinese and Pomeranian, as well as cats like Persian and Himalayan, need to be groomed as well. For information about Dakota contact the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society. www.gpaas.org or call 313-884-1551.  20048 Harper Ave. Harper Woods, 48225. Monday-Friday 10am to 3pm.
