Clarkston Haunted House Design Challenge

Women in Engineering is sponsoring a new and innovative approach to getting kids interested in engineering with the Haunted House Design Challenge, in which students can fuse art, engineering and science together to create a real haunted house.

Each week the group hosts a learning seminar where teams learn the magic behind the monsters, bringing in experts in the different fields. Local artist Wendy Popko is leading the first seminar on painting foam to look like wood and stone, Christine from Michigan Makeup Academy will be leading a seminar on latex makeup, the Society of Women Engineers will be helping create animated props and Ed Terebus, co-creator of Erebus in Pontiac, came out to our kick off meeting to talk about haunting and scaring.

Students will have just a few hours to set up their props and create a section of a haunted house in our middle school. Judging by a panel will take place before opening to the public on Oct. 24 from 6-8 p.m. at Sashabaw Middle School. Tickets are just $3.00, or free with a pound of donated legos!

All proceeds go to supporting future STEM events.
