(WJBK) - We always tell young people to stay in school and get a college degree but many can't afford it, especially those who have gone through the foster care system.
Sometimes they have no family to turn to for help and for them, the dream of a college education is often out of reach. But there is help available, including a scholarship offered by the nonprofit group Samaritas.
Each state has an Education Training Voucher (ETV) program, and Samaritas has facilitated the ETV contract for Michigan since 2006.
ETV Coordinator Tanya Maki joins FOX 2 with more information, along with former foster child and ETV recipient Darren Harnden, who's about to graduate from Michigan State University.
