'Detroit' castmates volunteer at Gleaners, celebrate city's birthday

The stars of the new film "Detroit" are in town this week for the world premiere at the Fox Theatre on July 25. In the meantime, they're taking time to celebrate Detroit's 316th birthday and also give back to the community.

Cast members were at Gleaners Food Bank to help package food to distribute to families throughout southeast Michigan.

In honor of Detroit's birthday, they also handed out free coney dogs at American Coney Island and free water ices at Detroit Water Ice Factory to the first 316 people at each location.

"Detroit," from Academy Award Winning director Kathryn Bigelow, tells the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that rocked the city in the summer of 1967. The movie tells the story of a group of people who sought shelter at the Algiers Motel, which turned into one of the most dangerous places they could be.

The world premiere as at the Fox Theatre this week, and the movie opens in select theaters this weekend. The Bel Air Luxury Cinema in Detroit and the AMC Star John R 15 in Madison Heights are included in those select theaters.

The movie opens in theaters nationwide on August 4. "Detroit" is rated R.
