Experience 'Up North' in downtown Detroit at Outdoor Adventure Center

DETROIT (WJBK) - You can get a taste of Up North right in downtown Detroit at the Department of Natural Resources' new Outdoor Adventure Center.

The 41,000 square foot center is located at 1801 Atwater Street in the historic Globe Building, and provides hands-on opportunities for families to learn about the outdoors.

A big hit with the little ones is the big tree, which they can climb and slide down. Next to it is a small camping area where they can pretend to camp. Upstairs, a play house lets them get a feel for gardening and making lunch.

"As you get older, things like riding the ORV, using the hunting simulator, fishing - those are more exciting," says Linda Walter. "I think we've learned that some people learn by listening, some by reading and by feel or touch, and here you can really engage and the woods comes alive and what your doing matters because your part of it."

It's a great inexpensive day out for the family with learning opportunities.

Tickets for adults ages 13 and up are $5, and children 12 and under are $3. Children under 2 are free. The center is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
