Fox 2 Pet of the Week and a warning about fleas

Cold weather is coming and many pet owners are reporting flea problems, particularly with cats. Fleas have a life cycle from a few weeks to a few months, so it is critical to catch and treat early to prevent further infestation.  Even with the proper medications it can take up to 3 months to rid your pet of fleas, and vacuuming and washing will also be very important. You may notice your pet scratching.  As this is allergy season, it could simply be allergies, but if you find specks that look like salt and pepper in your dog or cat’s coat, or live fleas, you have a problem. The safest and most effective treatments for fleas are obtained from your veterinarian.  They will decide the best product based on the type of pet, age and weight of your pet. Purchasing products over the counter may not always be the best choice as the wrong products may lead to other problems like toxicity and illness.

The Fox 2 Pet of the week is "Twiggy," an 8 week old female white and black domestic short hair. For adoption information follow the link to the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society at: www.gpaas.org. or call 313-884-1151.
