During this season of giving, there is still time to give one of the most important and priceless presents of all - the donation of lifesaving blood.
Art Van Furniture, FOX 2 TV and the American Red Cross are hosting their 6th annual community blood drive Monday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Art Van Furniture's Corporate Training Center at 6500 E. 14 Mile Road in Warren.
"Donating blood is such a simple process, and a single, selfless donation can save multiple lives," said Gary Van Elslander, president of Art Van Furniture. "Over the past five years, Art Van employees, our guests, FOX 2 viewers and metro Detroiters have donated blood during this important event to support the efforts of the American Red Cross."
The American Red Cross is the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the United States, collecting and processing approximately 40 percent of the blood supply for patients in approximately 2,700 hospitals nationwide. A single donation can save help save the lives of up to three people. Eighty percent of the blood donations given to the American Red Cross are collected at mobile blood drives set up at community sites, while the remaining 20 percent are collected at American Red Cross donor centers.
"The need for blood donations is even greater around the holidays, and inclement weather, the busy pace of the season and travel can impact the schedules and intentions of those who might otherwise donate," said Jamila Wilson, regional representative for the American Red Cross' Southeastern Michigan Blood Services. "Donating blood is a meaningful gift any time of the year, and particularly during this season of giving, when the opportunity to save a life or to have your life saved through a single donation means so much to so many."
Donors participating in the drive will receive a complimentary American Red Cross holiday long-sleeve t-shirt, while supplies last. Donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 years old with parental consent), weight a minimum of 110 pounds, and must present a valid picture ID.
