Keeping pets safe during the holidays

The holidays are a busy season for visiting family and friends. Many people bring their pets along. The Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society's Corinne Martin says the shelter sees a high incidence of lost pets as they wander out of a yard or escape through the door.  They are now in an unfamiliar area and quickly become lost. Martin recommends that when visiting with dogs, keep them on a leash at all times when going outdoors or opening doorways for visitors.  Keep cats in a secure room and do not allow access to the entire home. Be sure that visiting pets have collars and identification tags, and if they have microchips, be sure they are registered with most current contact information. This week's adoptable pet is "Sadie," a 1-year-old female Terrier Mix. Those interested in adopting can contact the shelter at 313-884-1551 or www.GPAAS.org. Adoption fee is $310 with approved application based on compatibility.
