Living the Life: helicopter parenting and advice from a pro

On 'Living The Life,' Anqunette Jamison, Deena Centofanti, Sherry Margolis and Monica Gayle dive into the issues affecting their own lives -- as well as the everyday lives of those in metro Detroit. It's a mix of inspiration, motivation (and sometimes maybe too much information).

This week, the women were talking about something parents everywhere have seen: helicopter parenting.

What is helicopter parenting? Parents who monitor everything their kids do, from sunscreen to job applications, to everything in between. But there's also 'lawnmower parenting', which is similar. Those parents will 'cut the path', so to speak, for their children.

Q knows a mom who goes to her kids' practices - not games - practices.

Deena knows someone who applied for jobs for her college graduate because she didn't think her son was applying for the right jobs, the right way.

Sherry says part of the issue is peer-pressure. If you're around other helicopter parents, there is pressure that you're a 'bad parent'.

So why do parents hover? Fear of dire consequences, feelings of anxiety, overcompensation, and peer pressure from other parents.
