Spa in Birmingham giving women with breast cancer a pause in life

- Many women enjoy going to the spa to get a facial or massage. Margot European Day Spa in Birmingham is one of the few places where breast cancer patients can find solace, and treatments tailored to their needs.

"I've finished 12 rounds of chemotherapy I've had five different surgeries since February," says Meko Price. On this day in particular, we caught up with the busy mother of two as she enjoyed a specialized facial and massage tailored to her specific needs by an oncology-trained esthetician.

'We have put togehter a consise menu that includes facials, massage, a body wrap and also hydrotherapy," says spa director Ursula Froehlich. "We feel like we add a nice balance and anytime you can balance the body it helps the body to begin to heal."
Oncology esthetics involves advanced education designed to provide estheticians knowledge of how to modify spa treatments to ensure a safe outcome for clients diagnosed with cancer.

"The training was through Beaumont's Integrated Medicine, which means mind, body and spirit. It's mainly an awareness of the comprimised client," explains Ann Marie Desser, an oncology estetician.

This kind of specialized massage is unique -- and something Meko is very grateful for.

"It's a relief because the places I've been before didn't know about the lymphatic system; they didn't understand what the port really does or where it is, and how to avoid it," says Price. "They're wonderful here in terms of their knowledge of not just the body, but also understand what you're going through as a cancer patient."

Owner Margot Kohler says she wants to make it her mission to make sure all women feel beautiful.

"We don't act like doctors; we don't act like a chemist. It's definitely balancing and it gives the body beautiful pleasure and relaxing," she says. "It's the most beautiful feeling anyone can give to any woman, when we're not just losing our hair and eyelashes - we also lose the femininity."

"I don't get a lot of chances to do this, where you just completely shut down, shut off and relax. So this is wonderful to have this facility, especially to have it available to patients like me; I think I'm not that typical in terms of BC patients who are working moms who get hit with a diagnosis [in their] 30s to 40s and they still have to go on with life. This is a great pause in a really bad situation," Price says.
