Pet Connect: What to do about ticks

In this week's pet connect segment, Corinne Martin from the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society discusses the diseases that can be spread to pets by ticks. Corinne says if your dog is in an area exposed to ticks, using a product to prevent them is necessary. If your dog is bitten by a tick, first remove the tick and then see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Your vet will do a blood test to determine if a tick borne disease has been transferred. Your dog will be given antibiotics for at least a month and be retested. Without antibiotics, the disease can progress and your dog can become very ill. This week's adoptable pet is "Chester." He is a 6-month old male Hound mix. For adoption information call: 313-884-1551 or follow the link to: Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society.
