TBT: Starting the Detroit Marathon in 1984

The year was 1984. The shorts were short and the hair was long but the runners, like they had done for the previous five years, were running to Canada and back.

For the 37th year, runners will lace em up and hit the road for the Detroit Marathon as they run one of the unique marathons in the world.

This week's Throwback Thursday is a look back at the 1984 Marathon. As thousands of men and women had their numbers and their shoes, they were ready to run as they left the starting line.

The first marathon was in 1978. The marathon is known for being international in scope. This year it will run through the tunnel into Windsor and back over the bridge into Detroit. The marathon will also pass through Mexicantown, Corktown, Downtown, Belle Isle, and Indian Village.

FOX 2 thanks the Detroit Historical Society for this and all of our Throwback Thursday stories.
