Newsmaker: Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree

New Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree is on a mission to get as many residents back on track with paying their delinquent property taxes.

The challenge is daunting. Foreclosures are down 46 percent from last year, but he says there are more than 15,000 delingquent properties still left countywide, 90 percent of which are in Detroit.

ACLU recently filed a class-action lawsuit agianst the county and city on behalf of detroit homeowners who claim the county's upcoming tax sale violates the federal fair housing act by disproportiaonately foreclosing on african american homeowners. It also accuses detroit of having inflated city tax assessments.

Sabree said he could not address the suit, but did discuss how his office is working with people to get on payment programs during a visit to the Fox2 studios Saturday.
