Juvenile justice continues to be a point of emphasis in Wayne County and one local judge is taking his message --- and methods -- of teaching young people personal responsibility and how to take the right path through life to the community.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Frank Szymanski, of the Third Circuit Court juvenile division, visited the Fox2 Studios Saturday morning to talk about his new book and the first graduating class of his Guitars Not Guns program. The initiative helped expose more than a dozen teens to music, and guitar-playing in particular, and leaves them a guitar they can play their own for the rest of their lives.
“What we need to do is get kids to recognize that there’s something better in life,” he said. “It’s really about who you are, not what you have.”
Szymanski’s new book, Identity Design, takes a deeper dive into that philosophy and draws on more than a decade of his experience on the bench to help people transform their lives for the positive.
