20th Annual Kidney Walk at the Detroit Zoo

Kidney disease affects roughly 900,000 Michigan residents, and most don't even know it.

To help build awareness and continue to fund groundbreaking research, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan started the annual Kidney Walk two decades ago. Since then, more than 65,000 walkers have participated and raised $5.5 million, making it among the biggest kidney walks in the country.

The effort continued Sunday at the Detroit Zoo, where organizers hoped to have nearly 8,000 participants help draw attention to the importance of early detection and kidney disease prevention, while raising funds in support of kidney patients and their families.
