The Players Guild of Dearborn continues its 89th season with the international award-winning "Legally Blonde- The Musical" on stage every Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm beginning Nov. 11 through Dec. 4. Based on the hit movie starring Reese Witherspooon, "Legally Blonde" brings the adventures of Elle Woods to the stage with music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach.
The musical follows the transformation of sorority girl Elle Woods, played by Maura Donovan (Plymouth), as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal after enrolling at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III, played by Adam Carey (Taylor). Featuring original songs including "Omigod You Guys," "Chip on My Shoulder" and "Bend and Snap," "Legally Blonde" is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. Of course the musical would not be complete without Elle's trusty Chihuahua Bruiser, played by the adorable Belle (owner Bobbie Green).
"This show has a little something for everyone, providing a very positive message while mixing in enough humor and sex appeal to keep everyone's attention," said director Ron Williams. "While sticking close to the original movie, the musical gives us a chance to learn more about these characters that many people have grown to love. There is a wonderful underlying theme of succeeding in the face of adversity with many of the characters overcoming stereotypes that are projected onto them and becoming the individuals that they were meant to be."
Given the strong female empowerment message of the play, the production team has partnered with First Step, an organization whose mission is to eliminate both domestic and sexual violence by providing comprehensive services to individuals and families impacted by these crimes. Those interested in supporting First Step can do so by donating a consumable item (paper towel, toilet paper, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair brushes, etc.) during one of "Legally Blonde's" performances that will be given to the organization after the show's run.
Due to certain themes, "Legally Blonde" is definitely a story that anyone mature enough can appreciate. Admission is $20 per person. The Players Guild is located at 21730 Madison in Dearborn.
