Gleaners Trying to Keep the Summer Hunger Free

Nearly 300,000 children in southeast Michigan rely on free or reduced-price school meals, and during the summer, many of these kids are at risk of going hungry.

Gleaners Community Food Bank is working to change that through its Hunger Free Summer campaign. And it’s furthering its mission with programs like Cooking Matters, a groundbreaking nutrition-education program that takes a cooking-centered approach to nutrition and household budgeting.

Chef Jake Williams visited the Fox2 Kitchen Sunday morning to feature one of his favorite kid-friendly recipes, and Ryan Hoyle, chief development officer of Gleaners, joined him to discuss the program's importance.
