Vernor's Celebrates 150 Years of Sweet Soda

Vernor’s is a Detroit institution.

Pharmacist James Vernor developed the ginger-flavored beverage in the 1800's to help soothe stomachaches and in the meantime also created a large following that has spanned generations.

This year, the company is celebrating the popular drink’s 150thanniversary, making it one of the oldest soft drinks in the world. Company officials are inviting fans to help mark the occasion with a special event at the Detroit Historical Museum.

Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include a Vernor's-themed poker run, Vernor's crafts for kids, an appearance by the Vernor's Gnome, historical presentations and a film screening.

Bob Bury, CEO of the Detroit Historical Society, visited the Fox2 Studios Saturday morning to preview the celebration and share an old favorite with a Detroit feel – a Vernor’s float with Stroh’s vanilla ice cream.
