New statistics show that lip procedures are booming

New statistics just released show that lip procedures, including lip implants, are booming.

New statistics just released show that lip procedures, including lip implants, are booming.

Take Kim Cosimar, for example. Though she has had her picture taken thousands of times as an international model, it's these "after" photos of her new lips that have her so excited.

"My lips were getting thinner as I aged and I really just wanted to look like I looked 20 years ago, and that was my motivation," she says.

Kim is one of a record number of women who recently underwent lip implant surgery. The silicone implants come in three sizes and are quickly put in place with a couple of incisions and then stitches.

For years, like millions of other women, Kim relied on injections to plump up her lips.

"Those have made lip augmentation very easy. And then with newer lip implant technology, that really has taken the industry by storm," says Dr. Robert Houser, who is with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

In fact, according to new data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or ASPS, a record number of more than 27,000 lip implants took place last year. That's one about every 20 minutes - and it's an increase of nearly 50 percent since the year 2000.

"Clearly, lips and the enhancement of the lip and pucker are on the rise. It's very popular and it's become something that patients are desiring more and more," says David H. Songs, MD, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Today, women are seeking a more natural look. A national survey commissioned by ASPS ranked Hollywood's hottest lips and found the most likeable lips belong to Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Garner, beating out celebs with larger puckers like Angelina Jolie, Kylie Jenner, Beyoncé and Lisa Rinna.

"So, it's not just about fullness, it's about the perfect pucker for each and every patient," says Songs.

"I'm so happy. I have never regretted it, not one day. I love it," Kim says.

Lip fillers and lip injections, is still the most popular method to get bigger lips. About 2 and a half million soft tissue fillers were done last year, but the implants are gaining in popularity, too.

In fact, more than 100 men a month got lip implants in 2015 - which is a 400 percent increase since 2000.
