Commerce Twp woman and her 'Divas' ready for Saturday's Race for the Cure

In Health Works  a Commerce Township woman is told she has breast cancer-  but thanks to her team, she can't be stopped.

It's an impressive team that is 80 strong. And at the center of Donna's Divas is Donna Davis.

At 54, she's beating breast cancer with a little help from her friends. Just take a look at her office, all decked out in pink and red with notes of encouragement, friendship showing off a lot of heart - and hearts.

"Soon after i was diagnosed with cancer, I came to work and it was a surprise," Donna said. "I walked out to see my staff and they had it all decorated for me.

She's been a foster care supervisor at the Oakland County Department of Health and Human Services in Pontiac for 20 years and has never felt more loved.

"It was just overwhelming just to see that they would go to this length," she said, "for me."

Donna found a lump in her left breast last fall. In a hallway conversation she confided in her boss that she was worried and she got some strict orders.

"I told her I needed her to go back to her desk and make a phone call and tell me that she set up an appointment with her doctor," said Davis' boss. "From there she found out she did have breast cancer."

Donna had the stage 2 cancer removed at Karmanos Cancer Institute, and went through chemotherapy, next was radiation.

Her coworkers have created Donna's Divas - a team that has raised more than $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which impresses even the team captain -Roxanna Goodwin.

"She wanted to fight, we wanted to support her while she was fighting," Goodwin said. "So we came together as a team and we hope we can be an example to everyone."

Part of the office decoration is hearts filled with handwritten messages of support.

"With the support of my staff, the Department of Health and Human Services family, it's given me that boost, to live a normal life," Donna said.  "Just to keep coming to work. And that what has helped me through this ordeal and I'm glad to be part of such a supportive team."

Donna's Divas will be making a splash at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday morning at Chene Park.
