Go red: eat the right foods to protect your heart

February is National Heart Health month and there are things that you can do to help your heart. The easy ones are stop smoking, exercise more, and eat the right foods. But what are those foods?

Darlene Zimmerman is a registered dietician at Ford Hospital. She said skip the saturated fats.

"Fat that is solid at room temperature, that's the way to think of it," she said.

There are alternatives. Want that red meat? Skip the steak and pick the beef tenderloin instead. It tastes good but cuts down on the bad fats. She also said to eat foods to protect your heart, especially beans.

"Kidney, navy, black, garbanzo, any bean. They're a great source of soluble fiber which lowers bad cholesterol."

There's good fat in avocados, too. In fact, it's the same that's found in olive oil and peanut oil

A whole grain many people don't eat is farro, which can be used as a substitute for rice. Eating whole grains have lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer. 

Lastly, for the women, strawberries and blueberries. Women who eat them three times a week have lower risk of heart attack.
