HIV facts revealed

After Charlie Sheen’s announcement that he is HIV positive, we are getting some answers about HIV with Beaumont’s infectious disease doctor, Dr. Christopher Carpenter.

The diagnosis for HIV consists of a “simple blood test that is accurate,” said Dr. Carpenter.

The disease gets deadly potentially “if you do not get treatment and it evolves into AIDS,” said Dr. Carpenter.

The treatment is very effective and has very little side effects. You can live a long life if you keep to the treatment.

“There are still 50,000 new cases of HIV in the United States and the message is to get tested,” said Dr. Carpenter.
