Women's Health Week a reminder that annual physicals are needed

In today's Health Works, Deena Centofanti was at the Wayne State University Physician Group at the Troy campus.

It is Women's Health Week which means that ladies need to call their doctors and schedule a physical.

Why is that? Let's ask Dr. Maribeth Mateo why we need annual physicals if we are feeling okay.

"You might think you are feeling really well, but sometimes there might be something underlying that you just don't know," she said. "You might take the way you are feeling as normal, but maybe they are not really normal. You need to get checked out."

But what does a physical involve?

"First you need to make the appointment," Mateo said. "When you see your primary care provider, they will take a complete history, head to toe of everything that is going on. What's been happening in your life, then they will do a complete physical exam.

"Then we're going to order some lab tests as needed."

Deena told Mateo that she had been feeling tired and cold sometimes during her checkup. So what routine screenings did Mateo suggest?

"I am going to be checking your cholesterol levels, that's kind of a routine screening," she said. "I am also screening you for diabetes. Based on the fact you are also very tired, I want to make sure you don't have an underlying anemia. We will check a complete blood count for that. We'll see where your hemoglobin is.

"Also we're going to check your thyroid. Because an under active thyroid can lead to those symptoms."

Deena said she will get the results in 24 hours and we'll all find out how she did.
