Large fire rips through Canterbury Woods Apartment complex in Inkster

A large fire ripped through Canterbury Woods Apartment complex in Inkster, Mich. on Saturday.

- A fire at Canterbury Woods Apartments on Beech Daly Road destroyed about 36 units Saturday, leaving many residents homeless.

"All I could see was the flames," said resident Diamond Snow. "We lost everything. We've only been living here a month."

Inkster Firefighters got the call in the afternoon around 1:30, also requesting aide from Garden City, Westland and Wayne.

"We don't have any injuries so far, no reported injuries, undetermined on the cause and origin," said Inkster Fire Dept. Sgt. Eric Meyers.

Meyers said the three buildings affected shared a common attic space. The fire hopped from one to the next, before fighter fighters stopped the flames.

"It's definitely going to displace a lot of people," Meyers said. "It's gonna be a tough day for them today."

Displaced residents, still in shock, are making plans on how to move forward.

"I'm happy everybody's out OK, but we have nothing but the clothes we have on our backs," Snow said. "Everybody's at a loss -- it's just so sad."

Red Cross was on scene and working out of the leasing office, making sure everyone who lost their home is getting assistance, and has a place to rest their head tonight.
