Detroit police say the incident happened on Liberal near Queen on the city's east side at 12:20 a.m. Monday.
That's when police say this man 46-year-old Shawn Christian, armed with an AK-47, allegedly forced a 30-year-old woman into a home at gunpoint.
Her boyfriend, the homeowner also in his 40s, grabbed a gun. Police say both men started shooting.
"Initially we're investigating this as a home invasion gone bad," said Sgt. Cassandra Lewis. "The perpetrator was shot and he is now deceased. The homeowner also suffered a gunshot wound and is listed in temporary serious condition at the hospital at this time."
"I mean it's sad that you have to do that," said one neighbor. "But you've got to do what you have to do,"
Neighbors and police acknowledging this seems like self-defense. But the homeowner's weapon was a stolen gun, according to police.
Now he could be looking at charges, even though it appears he was protecting himself and his girlfriend.
"It's a blessing he was able to protect himself and his family," another neighbor said. "I mean there's too much crime going on out here and with the police response time - you've got to take it into your own hands sometimes."
"When you're in a situation where there is a home invasion and someone is forced inside of the home," Lewis said. "You just kind of do what you have to do, to get out of that situation."
As for Christian he was on probation. His priors include assault with e dangerous weapon and criminal sexual conduct.
It is not clear if the homeowner and deceased knew each other.
