1 injured after shootout between homeowner, suspected intruders

Detroit police say a suspected home intruder has been injured during a shootout between the homeowner on Detroit's east side. Police say it appears it was a self-defense type shooting.

Police say two suspects tried to break in a home around 4 a.m. Monday in the 55 hundred block of University Place, which is near the intersection of Chandler Park Drive and Cadieux Road.

Police say the homeowner used a .40 caliber to shoot at the suspects and the suspects returned fire with a shotgun. Sources say about 5-6 shots were fired. A 21-year-old male was hit.

He was taken to the hospital where he's listed in critical condition.

Police are still investigating the break in.
