Safes stolen from Birmingham gas station, owner offers reward

A gas station burglary was caught on tape in Birmingham and the owner is offering a reward.
A Birmingham gas station in an area not known for crime, recently became a target of thieves.

They were in and out in seconds,  a burglary caught on camera at Adams and Maple roads, where the owner is offering an incentive to capture the crooks.

Armed with just a crow used to pry the door open, two men covered from head to toe, break into the family owned gas station at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"This is a nice neighborhood station and that's how we try to keep it," said Kyle Hannawa, the owner of the gas station. "And we don't want the riff-raff. Unfortunately the riff-raff came when we weren't open."

Ignoring the alarm, the two suspects try for a second to steal an ATM machine, then focus on the office - as if they knew where to go.

"It must have been someone scoping out the place, watching, we don't know," Hannawa said.

Within seconds the suspects trashed the office and come out with two heavy duty safes full of money, coins, guns and important paper work.

Once outside, marks could be seen on the pavement, showing the path they took. The suspects pushed the safes that weigh hundreds of pounds out.

On security video it shows them eventually making their way to a house that is currently for sale. With no one in there, so they parked their getaway car, loaded up the safes and fled.

"I want these guys caught," Hannawa said. "It's not about the money that was in the safe it's more about why, for what. This is wrong."

The owner wants to find the suspects so much, he's willing to give up more of his own money for information leading to an arrest.

"Anyone out there that knows what is going on, speak up - $1,500 cash," Hannawa said. "Start your new year off right."

In the meantime, he's going over past months of tapes trying to find out the identity of the two thieves.

If you have a tip you're asked to call the Birmingham police.
