When is too much stress a dangerous thing

 

Stress is a part of all of our lives but the question is, when is it too much.

Internal medicine Dr. Karen Russell from Henry Ford Health Systems stopped by FOX 2 to talk about it. 

Symptoms of mental stress include - depressed mood, difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating.Symptoms of physical stress include - heart racing, elevated blood pressure, stomach ache and difficulty eating.

When physical sysymptomsre felt, it is a sign of chronic stress, Russell said. 

Due to certain hormones in the body you will notice an increase in your waist size, a fat deposit around the waist," she said. "Your sugar will be up, your blood pressure and hear rate will be elevated. 

"This on a consistent basis can be harmful to the body."

Megan Fryer, on occupational therapist with Henry Ford offered a tip on bringing down stress.

One involves deep breathing. Place one hand on your stomach and breath in through the nose and out through the mouth, she said.

Russell said it can be very helpful, and may trigger a relaxation response.
