Car hits light post outside Romulus school causing lock down

A vehicle hit one of the light poles in front of the Romulus Elementary school.
Romulus Elementary was locked down Tuesday after a car crashed feet from the entrance.

The entrance of the school is lined with light posts - with the exception of one after someone allegedly drove their car up the sidewalk and crashed into the post just outside the front doors.

Tire tracks could be seen leading up the sidewalk.

According to witnesses at the school two people at the scene were taken into custody, got into an argument and fight with police before being taken away.

There have been no charges filed yet.

"My principal reported to me that a car came out of control, hit the light up there," said Marjie McAnally, Romulus Schools Superintendent. "When that happened, she went to an immediate lock down. She didn't know why the car was there so she made sure the kids were safe and called the police."

The incident happened at about  2 pm, while more than 300 students were Inside the magnet school trying to learn.

"All of the doors are locked normally, the main door becomes locked and all the classrooms are locked," McAnally said.

FOX 2 was there as police escorted an ambulance up to the jail drop off area. After noticing our camera, the ambulance then pulled around to the other side of the jail.

Sources within the department say it was connected to the incident at the elementary school earlier in the day.

The light can and will be replaced, while the same can't be said for the children that were inside - of which none were hurt.
