2 children safe after auto thief drives off with them in the backseat

Authorities are investigating in Redford after two children were involved in an attempted auto theft Monday morning.

The Redford Police Department says the victim left her young children inside of her running vehicle while she stood in the doorway of an auto repair shop. Police say the mother was able to maintain eye contact of her vehicle, but she soon saw a suspect drive away away in her car.

Her two children were still inside.

Police say the victim and a shop employee followed the suspect in another car. A few blocks away, they say the suspect parked the stolen vehicle and walked away. The children were not harmed.

The suspect is described as a white male, around 5 feet 3 inches tall with a scruffy beard and mustache in his 20s or 30s. He was wearing a light blue sweatshirt with a dark blue stripe on the sleeves and a black hat.

The auto shop is in the area of Beech Daly between 6 and 7 Mile roads.
