Harper Woods Clerk attacked during Parkcrest Inn robbery

It was early Tuesday morning when a female clerk at the Parkcrest Inn On Harper Avenue in Harper Woods did what she could to prevent a robbery.  But she was overpowered at gunpoint and now the cops are looking for two crooks.

"One of the suspects ordered a beverage, a juice from the attendant and she wasn't able to slide it under the security tray so she opened the door up to give it to the person," said Director of Harper Woods Public Safety Jim Burke. "As soon as she did, that the guy grabbed the door and began assaulting her. He was joined by a second suspect  who produced a gun. There was a pretty valiant struggle going on, she was fighting for her life basically at that point."

Once the clerk saw the gun she backed off and the crooks got away with a couple hundred dollars from the cash register.

Suspect one: a black male, 20 to 30 years old, 5'8" to 6' tall, 230 to 250 lbs. He was wearing a light-colored hoodie sweatshirt.

Suspect two: a black male, 20 to 30 years old, 140 to 170 lbs. with short hair and scruffy facial hair, wearing a black sweatshirt and dark pants.

"I think they saw an opportunity with a lone female behind the counter and they chose to prey on her," said Lt. John Vorgitch, Harper Woods Public Safety.

But some today are calling the clerk heroic because of the struggle.

"I was upset about what happened to the woman who was the hotel clerk and I wanted to see if she was alright," said Neighbor Richard Dean.

The management at the Parkcrest Inn wouldn't go on camera, they're still very shaken up, but they did tell Fox 2 that they've never had an incident like this before. As for the clerk, she is shaken up, but she will be okay.

Harper Woods Police say there have been 15 armed robberies so far this year, but they've solved eight of them.

"It's a lot because it's a small town, it's like 2.2 square miles I believe. I will say this, our police force is outstanding we have great city services here," said Business Owner Michelle Winstanley.

"We think someone knows who these two guys are and we're asking if anybody does, please contact us so we can get them off the street," said Burke.

If you have any information about this incident please call Harper Woods Police or crime Stoppers at 1-800-speak-up.
