From a pew inside the Lake Orion United Methodist Church, Donna Waite remembers one of the fallen warriors. She taught 30-year-old Trevor Blaylock of Lake Orion in religious classes when he was an elementary student. Blaylock was one of the Marines aboard the chopper.
"He loved helping other people," said Donna Waite. "He was always one who would volunteer to help someone who needed something. We had a program in the church for the youth where they go out into the community and they do home repairs and do yard work. He was always very involved with that. He just had such a love of people and wanting to make a difference in people's lives."
Blaylock was married in this church. He married a girl from the area. They have two daughters under Five-years-old. They all live near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His parents still live in Lake Orion.
"Even after he went away to be in the Marines and he came back different than the way I remembered him, it was still the Trevor who wanted to come and hug the people that he loved and know what was going on in your lives as much as you wanted to know what was going on in his life," said Waite.
U.S. Marine Marcus Bawol of Warren was also on board the chopper. Bawol was a graduate of Warren Mott High School.
"He always did everything right. he was a really sweet kid and was always as sweet as can be to his mom. He went to school with all my older kids," said Barbara Schavon.
Barbara Schavon, a family friend and neighbor, gave Bawol haircuts while he was a young boy. She said he was planning his wedding with fiance Erika Hipple.
"He was going to be a lifer, wasn't just go and do your short amount of time and get out, he kept going back," said Schavon.
The third Michigan Marine also on board, was Staff Sgt. Andrew Seif of Holland. A 2006 graduate of Ottawa High School. Seif had just been honored with the Silver Star on Friday. It's the military's third highest award for valor. The Pentagon said Seif helped rescue a fellow teammate while both were under heavy enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2012.
