Girls brag on social media about robbing Dairy Queen tip jar

In St. Clair Shores, Dairy Queen employees say several young women swiped their tip jar full of cash.

"I thought, oh my gosh. Here I am giving away everything today and they're stealing what they can't get," says Dairy Queen owner Liz Hope.

The girls were not the appreciative customers Hope was hoping to get when she handed out free ice cream cones Monday in honor of Dairy Queen's 75th anniversary. She says that's when a group of five unruly teens walked up to her stand on Harper Avenue and collected their free ice cream cones, but instead of thanking her she says they took off with the tip jar.

"I think they have a lot of guts," says Hope.

"I turned around and I screamed to my boss. I was like, 'They just stole our tip cup!' says Alexis Demaria, who was waiting on the girls at the time.

Demaria stayed with the crowd lined up outside, while Hope and her pregnant daughter ran after the girls.

"I said I was going to call the police; they didn't care, saying all these names at me. When I looked to the left the one girl had fallen with the tip cup, and I figured it was karma," says Hope.

It was then discovered the girls admitted about the crime on the social media site Snapchat.

There it was, clear as day, "robbed Dairy Queen tip jar," as they each proudly smile for the camera. They sent it to all of their friends and then some.

"I think they are stupid. I mean, really, who does that? They should be the dumbest criminals," says Hope.

"I can't believe they're not smart enough to put that on the Internet. You just did something that's a crime and everybody got to see it now," says Demaria.

But Dairy Queen's customers didn't let them down. Not only did they share the Snapchat video, they also snapped pictures of the getaway car and the license plate, which is now in the hands of the St. Clair Shores police.

Hope says she doesn't want the girls to go to jail, but hopes they learn a lesson.
