Taxi & limo companies get legislative support against Uber in Michigan

Is Uber's future cloudy in Michigan? The ride-sharing company and app makes it is easy for users to find a ride with just a few taps on their smartphone. Some are pushing to make Uber regulate its drivers like limo and taxi companies

The safety of Uber has been a question that cities across the country have dealt with in the past few years. Ever since the company launched, the question 'is it safe?' has lingered for lawmakers.

Uber drivers aren't subject to the same rules or oversight as taxi and limo drivers. Sen. Rick Joan wants to change that and he has the support of Nick Lavdas, the owner of Lavdas Limousine

"They're not drug tested because they're independent contractors and they have no control over the drivers. They could be on heroin for all you know and he's going to drive you around." Lavdas said.

But if you're assuming Lavdas is saying that because Uber is taking business away from him, think again.

"That's absolutely false. We're a transportation company with buses, coaches, and luxury vehicles. That's a glorified taxi service, which we are not."

Sen. Joan said he doesn't want to end Uber in Michigan but he just wants it to be safe. Johnny Prep owns Mr. B's and says he has no questions about the safety of Uber.

"My experience with Uber is a much better experience than with any cabs I've had in this town," Prep said. "If I would put my daughter in one, I'd rather put her in an Uber than a cab."
