Books, books, books; buttons, buttons, buttons. Lighting up destinations to books, books, and books. What's not to love as the Detroit Public Library main branch turns 150.
"Celebration, right, that's kind of what we're trying to do, you only turn 150 once," said A. J. Funchess, assistant marketing director for the Detroit Public Library.
Library marketing guy, A. J. Funchess, talks about the public celebration happening Wednesday.
"We're really excited about how many people are actually interested in coming here. It's going to be a jam-packed event. A lot of food, friends, music, fun," said Funchess.
A card catalog, it even smells like a card catalog.
Music, media, internet, computers, kids stuff, dad Scott brings his daughters here weekly. Lucy is part of the 1000 books program.
"Yeah, oh yeah, big fan." said Scott.
Where else can you be exposed to so much culture, soaring murals, stained glass, marble stairs and Vader's little princess? Not to mention:
"Well, free books," said Scott.
"We have a whole year planned of events that are going to be fun and entertaining, but also educating folks about what we have, poetry sessions for example," said Funchess.
Wednesday at 5 p.m. come to the Detroit Public Library and say happy sesquicentennial.
"It's a tongue twister so we try to kind of not say it, we write it down a lot," said Funchess.
