Mother of children in freezer charged with child abuse; $1 million bond

Michelle Blair was charged with child abuse Thursday as family members are speaking out.
She is the Detroit mother who confessed to police she killed two of her children and left their bodies in a freezer for years.

Mitchelle Blair, 35, was charged Thursday with child abuse with a $1 million bond in 36th District Court. More charges are expected as the medical examiners continue their investigation.

"The charges in this matter are so heinous, that I am going to place the bond at $1 million," Judge Mary Chrzanowski.

Blair is due back in court April 2 and April 9 on the child abuse charges. According to the prosecutor's office once the autopsies are completed, two counts of first degree murder are expected.

Her arraignment for child abuse includes five felony charges. She appeared frustrated appearing via video conference before the court, then walking off camera.

Given a not guilty plea and awaiting possible murder charges, Blair without an attorney yet has confessed to police for the death of 13-year-old Stoni Blair and 9-year-old Stephen Berry.

Sources say she admits to burning, starving, beating and suffocating them before putting them in a stand alone freezer.

Bailiffs made the discovery on Tuesday morning.

Neighbors said they had noticed the children had not been seen for some time and say they got different reasons from Blair as to their whereabouts.

"We were always like, 'Where's Stephen' and (Blair) used to say he's in Georgia with his auntie," said a young boy who played with Stephen. "(Or) over his grandmother's house."

The two surviving children are staying with their great aunt who told FOX 2 on Thursday that they are "doing okay" considering what they have been through.

"I really want to go and just hug my niece and the little boy so much," said Tracy Dorsey, Stoni's aunt. "I just want to hug them, because how do you do this for two years?"

Dorsey said that Stoni's father, Alexander Dorsey is working on getting custody of his 17-year-old.

"He's taking it very hard," she said. "Because he knows he could have done more."

The Dorsey family says the suspected Blair abused the children for years.

Sources say upon discovering the body, the home was extremely dirty and had no food inside.

The Dorsey family also says they do not believe Blair's story she told police that she snapped after catching Stoni and Stephen sexually assaulting their younger brother. The called her calculating and manipulative.

"You are evil," Tracy Dorsey said. "You played it, you played us, you played your neighbors. You played everybody."

Neighbors and friends have planned a vigil to remember the two young children and try to heal.

"It will be awhile before I forgive her," Dorsey said. "I will, but not right now. It's just too hard."

The family of Stoni Blair has a GoFundMe account they will use to bury the children together. CLICK HERE.
