Both the 55-year-old man and 47-year-old wife suffered gun shot wounds. Some neighbors say they heard the gun shots but did not think much of it.
It is common for people to shoot outside their homes for target practice according to residents - but once they saw Macomb County Sheriff cruisers at the house and news trucks, they knew something horrible had happened.
Investigators say by all appearances it was a murder-suicide, and neighbors are numb because of the tragedy.
"You always hear about it everywhere else," said neighbor Brian Simcox. "And when it happens right next door to you, you're kind of speechless about it."
It's unclear when the incident happened but the Macomb County Sheriffs office says the 911 call came in just before 1:30 Friday afternoon.
Someone came into the house in the 63200 block of Place and found the two bodies.
"I know they have kids," Simcox said. "And that's got to be difficult knowing it happens like that and trying to find out what happened and find out what went wrong."
"I just pray for the family their children," said neighbor Dan Munfo. "I don't know what else to say."
Neighbors FOX 2 spoke with say they interacted with the couple from time to time but by in large did not know a great deal about them even though they lived there for roughly 15 years.
"We see them once in a while," Simcox said. "But they're kind of quiet people but you still don't realize what's going on inside."
Neighbors told FOX 2 the woman was deaf and was a postal worker.
Sources say a female roommate also lived at the house, but she wasn't there at the time.
Court records indicate the couple filed for bankruptcy but there's no indication that played any role in what happened.
"It's just hard to fathom," said neighbor Michael Muylaert. "Because what makes somebody do that?"
It is a question investigators are still trying to answer.
