A Shelby Township woman was just one mile from the finish line when the bombs went off.
Nancy Smith is ready to run the marathon again, but this time she's running for a different reason and turning that tragedy into something positive.
The 14-time Boston Marathon participant was only two miles from the bombs.
"There were ambulances and emergency vehicles just whizzing by us on the course," Smith said. "I knew that was not the norm."
That experience inspired her - "I came away from Boston 2013 that every day counts," she said.
Smith applied to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to run her 15th Boston Marathon - this time for charity.
That was when she got hooked up with 9-year-old Brooke Melford from New Jersey who has cancer.
"She's very sick," Smith said. "Right now she's in Bethesda. If you saw pictures of what she's had to undergo. She's just amazing.
"I cannot wait to meet her. I believe that she's God's angel and that he'll take care of her."
