The search has been ongoing since March, as at least six women reported a consistent theme of abduction and rape from an armed attacker. Now an arrest.
A Buick seen at a robbery on the city's west side was pulled over. Police say the driver threw a pistol out the window and in the back seat, was a man with a mask.
He is considered the person of interest in the serial rapes. Sources say he's a registered sex offender and while he was a juvenile, was convicted of rape.
He fits the suspect's description of approximately 250 pounds and light skinned. At least one victim picked his picture out of a police lineup.
After the traffic stop of the Buick and the arrest, sources say the person of interest refused to provide a DNA sample. A judge ordered one and as soon as possible police will rely on lab results to direct this investigation.
Women were raped from Santa Rosa to Stoepel from San Juan to Curtis to Monica. Neighborhood watch patrols went on high visibility across the west side. Police told women not to walk alone.
Activist Malik Shabazz has led many of the organized searches raising awareness. He is cautiously optimistic.
"Someone has been detained," Shabazz said. "A person of interest. We're waiting on DNA. We can't say it's over, and until we're told that it's over, we're going to stay out there. Because whoever may still be operating."
