All charges dropped against Floyd Dent, civil suit planned

Fallout comtinues in the wake of the beating of Floyd Dent by Inkster police last January.
On the same day Inkster's Police Chief announced her resignation, the man at the center of the investigation into her department is officially cleared of charges.

Drug charges against 57-year-old Floyd Dent were officially dropped Wednesday morning in Wayne County. The charges were thrown out in the wake of former Inkster police officer William Melendez being charged with crimes related to his arrest and beating in January.

In court on Wednesday, the prosecutor's office cited insufficient evidence for the reason to drop charges against Dent.

The beating and arrest in late January was caught on police dash cam video. Dent admitted to running a stop sign that initiated the arrest but says police went to far and even planted cocaine in his vehicle to get the charges.

Dent's reaction to the charges being dismissed were obvious: Relief.

"I felt like it was the end of the world for me," Dent said outside the courtroom Wednesday. "It's like I aged 20 years."

Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges of misconduct in office and assault against Melendez and said those are charges she believes she can prove.

Even though charges have been dismissed, he may be back in court soon. He plans to take the city of Inkster to court.

Michigan State Police has been investigating Dent's arrest and has not yet released its findings.

Dent is expected to be a witness for the prosecution and he has a few parting words for Melendez.

"Justice has been served," Dent said. "Everybody saw what he did and now he's behind bars."
