Family of accused Detroit serial rapist unaware of his charges

FOX 2 went to rape suspect Michael Darnell Sykes' house, located not far from where many of the attacks were reported.

Taryn Asher spoke to Syke's mother, who knew her 21-year-old son had been arrested but never knew he was suspected by police of being a serial rapist.

FOX 2: "Did you know he was arrested?"

Sykes' mother: "Yes."

FOX 2: "As the serial rapist?"

"You put me on TV, no, no he was not," she said. "He was picked up in the back of a car."

Sykes was brought into custody April 17 when police spotted him wearing the same mask as a the suspect in a police sketch. He was sitting in a Buick wanted in a robbery.

FOX 2: "He's accused of raping several women in this neighborhood."

"He has not been charged with that," Sykes' mother said.

FOX 2: "Yes he has, do you want see the paperwork."

"Let me see," Sykes' mother said.

Sykes has been charged for raping three young women on March 29.

Police say he abducted three young women ages 19, 20 and 21, at gunpoint from a gas station at Fenkell and Schaefer. He took them to an abandoned garage on Monica Street and allegedly raped them not far from where FOX 2 learned he lives with his mother.

When police ran Sykes' DNA, they were able to link him to two other cases with the same m.o. dating back to 2008, when he was 14 years old.

He has also been charged with the kidnapping, robbing and rape of a 25-and 26-year-old in an alley at Cortland and Wisconsin in Detroit.

"He's accused of what?" asked Sykes' mother.

FOX 2: "Kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct, he was accused of rape and served time as a juvenile, right."

"Get off my porch," the woman said.

Sources tell FOX 2 that Sykes has already served time as a juvenile for another rape. But back then he was not required to provide a DNA sample.

Now that he has, police are also investigating whether he may be connected to three other victims who were raped over the last several weeks including Joya Porties.

"The man assaulted me looks like him," she said. "But you must realize I saw this much of his face."

Porties was abducted and raped on March 25, was unable to pick Sykes out of a photo line up.

Identifying her attacker may come down to a simple piece of bubble gum her attacker left behind.

Police suspect sykes could be responsible for her rape as well.

"If it is him, I'm glad he's behind bars," she said. "If it's not him, this person is behind bars for something he did to another woman. Either way, I'm glad."

When police ran Sykes' DNA, they were able to link him to the cases he was charged with.

Investigators are still waiting for results on DNA evidence to see if he can be connected to three other rapes. He will be charged for the other cases Wednesday in district court at 10 a.m.
