Eugene Larkins was found in his room in the Warren Plaza Apartments in midtown Detroit apparently beaten to death.
Trena Denson has lived on the 8th floor of the apartments for three years next door to Larkins.
"He was a sweet little guy," Denson said. "He bought me cheesecake, he would come over. He would (say) 'Hi, how you doing.' If he didn't seem me for a few days he would ask me where I've been and said 'I miss you.'"
Larkin's body was found inside his apartment on Saturday. Police say its appears he died from blunt force trauma and they are investigating it as a homicide.
"I just saw him Friday, he was walking to the store," Denson said.
Denson stayed at her sister's residence Friday night.
"When I came home I just saw a big hole in his door," she said. "I just broke down crying because it's a hurtful thing."
Larkin's death raises a lot of questions about her own safety. Residents have a key card to get in, but as she invited FOX 2 in to have a look, the lack of security was apparent. She did not need to swipe the card to get in on this occasion.
Once inside there was an empty security desk and a sign in sheet. Denson says each room can monitor the lobby from their room's television.
"You can put your TV on channel 6 and see the front door, who comes in and out of the front door," Denson said. "Somebody had to see something."
Hopefully it will lead to clues as to who is responsible for Larkin's death.
A lot of older people stay in this building." Denson said. "It makes them scared. It's just sad, a life gone for what?"
Police tell FOX 2 right now they have some leads as to who may responsible for Larkin's death but so far no arrests.
