Letter carriers collecting food items Saturday for Gleaners

Time to clean our your cupboards and head to the grocery store for the 23rd Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Letter carriers, nationwide, will collect non-perishable food items from mailboxes Saturday along their routes.

Residents in Michigan's Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties are asked to place items in sturdy bags next to their mailboxes before 9 a.m. Saturday.

"All you have to do is open your door, place your donation wherever you receive your mail, and we'll pick it up and we make our deliveries Saturday and take it over to the local food banks," says Sandy Laemme of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Collected food will be taken from local post offices and delivered to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan distribution centers.
