The 21-year-old from Lincoln Park was spotted near West Road in Woodhaven around 3 a.m. going 79 mph in a 70 mph zone. Police say they started to follow him and, within a mile, clocked him nearly doubling his speed at 153 mph.
The driver pulled off near Eureka Road behind a business, where police arrested him for reckless driving.
"We do see speeds like this every once and a while on the freeways, but mostly it's by high-performance motorcycles; it's very seldom a vehicle," says Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw. The driver was in a 2005 Dodge Magnum.
"One thing that we're very concerned about is Michigan roads, right at this particular moment, aren't at the best shape for doing 153 mph. One little misstep on him and he could have killed himself or somebody else," says Shaw.
Shaw says drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been involved.
The driver has been released pending charges. He has no prior offenses, but will now have six points on his license and could face hefty fines and 93 days in jail.
