Police, residents on alert for two predators on Detroit's west side

Residents and police are teaming to sweep the streets looking for a pair of predators.
On the west side of Detroit, police are increasing the patrols, as are concerned citizen groups, like Detroit 300.

Everyone is searching for a suspect that has attempted to abduct 13-year-old girls in the area of Joy Road and Westwood near WAY Academy at 8701 Vernor.

The suspect is described as a black man with a goatee with a scar on his cheek. He is about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs around 170 pounds. He has been seen wearing a baseball cap, a black jacket and blue jeans, and was driving a black Ford Focus with dark rims.

If you think you have seen the suspect, call the Detroit police at (313) 596-5300.

A third incident, where a 14-year-old was raped near Cortland between Livernois and Stoepel, also has police and volunteers on alert.

FOX 2 went for a ride with the community action team Detroit 300 to look at the efforts being made by citizens.

"I want to make sure all the kids, women and elderly people are safe in the city of Detroit," says Greg Kelly of Detroit 300. "That's our main goal.

"I just patrol the area and anything we see suspicious, I take down the license plate and car they are driving. If they are walking, I film them, take a picture."

And the residents who live on the west side are nervous.

"He's not the only one, there's a lot of rapists around here," says Patricia Young. "It's ridiculous."

But for now, the patrols continue.
