Sen. Virgil Smith in court after shooting incident

State Senator Virgil Smith appeared in court Friday morning on assault and weapons charges.

It was the first time he's been seen publicly after being released on bond last week.

The lawmaker is accused of assault and shooting at his ex-wife's car after she says she caught him in bed with another women. According to police reports, Smith basically confessed to the crime calling it the "stupidest thing" he's done in his life.

FOX 2 has learned the weapon recovered from the home is a vintage rifle.

Michigan State Police are working to see if that weapon was powerful enough to pierce the car.

Smith is facing several felony charges including assault, malicious destruction of property and domestic violence.

He is due again in court on June 12.
